The chord changes. Your playing doesn't.

You know the shapes. The minor pentatonic sits under your fingers in every position, you've got licks that work, and over a one-chord vamp you sound pretty good. The trouble starts the moment the band moves.

The chord goes to the IV, then the V, then back home — and you're still sitting in the same box playing the same five notes, hoping they land. Sometimes they do. Sometimes a note sits there sounding wrong and you bend it somewhere safer and hope nobody noticed. That's not a technique problem, and no amount of extra licks fixes it. Nobody ever showed you what the changes are actually asking for.

What you'll learn

Why the I, IV and V are three different sounds rather than one scale you sit on top of — and what has to change under your fingers when the chord moves.

The notes that actually spell each chord: the 3rd and the ♭7 that make a dominant sound like itself, and where they already sit inside the shape you know.

Voice leading through the changes — shifting one or two notes to follow the chord instead of jumping to a different box every time it moves.

Targeting: landing on the right note as the chord arrives, and setting it up in the bar before so it sounds deliberate rather than lucky.

You're in early, and you help build it

Matt's Blues Academy isn't open yet. Book a seat and you're in from the moment you book — not on clinic night, straight away. Have a look round, poke at what's there, and bring whatever you turn up to the clinic.

What's there today

  • The private chat room, where Matt actually posts
  • A two-hour live clinic Matt gave at The Fellowship of Acoustics in the Netherlands, split into chapters
  • Live footage and behind-the-scenes from the road
  • The Fretboard Visualizer — chord tones through the I, IV and V, so you can practise exactly what the clinic covers

That's the full list. It's a small library and we're not going to pretend otherwise.

What you're actually getting is a seat at the table while the rest gets made. Ask for a tab and it goes on the list. Say a tool should work differently and it changes. The people who get in early are the ones who decide what Matt films next.

Your access carries on until the Academy opens properly, and you'll be first in line when it does.

Is this clinic right for you?

Ninety minutes is a real chunk of a Saturday. Here's who it's for, so you can decide before you pay.

This is for you if:

  • ✓You've hit a plateau and you're tired of guessing what's actually holding you back
  • ✓You want to understand why a phrase works, not just memorise another one
  • ✓You'd rather be shown the thinking than handed a tab

This is not for you if:

  • ✗You want a broad overview of blues guitar — this goes deep on one thing, playing over the changes, and deliberately leaves the rest alone
  • ✗You want a full technique overhaul — 90 minutes changes how you hear, not how you were built

How the 90 minutes run

No filler, no long intro. Guitar in hand from the top.

Teaching

Matt at the guitar, working through the material properly — playing it, breaking it down, then playing it again in context so you hear where it lands.

15 min

Pre-submitted questions

Once you've booked and signed in, send Matt your question from your seat page. He goes through as many as he can with the guitar in his hands, so you get an answer you can hear rather than one you have to imagine.

15 min

Open Q&A

Live and unscripted. Ask whatever the session brought up while it's still fresh.

Included

Backing tracks

Everyone who books gets the backing tracks used in the session, so you can keep working on the material over the same changes Matt demonstrated it on.

Included

Replay

Everyone who books gets the full recording afterwards, whether or not you made it on the night. It stays available for 12 months.

Who's teaching

Matt Schofield is a three-time British Blues Awards Guitarist of the Year (2010, 2011, 2012) and has spent thirty-plus years playing this music for a living — touring, recording, and working out on stage what actually holds a solo together.

He teaches the same way he plays: phrasing, time and tone first, shapes second. Not a list of licks to memorise, but the thinking underneath them — why a note lands where it does, and what makes the difference between correct and convincing.

This is Matt's own clinic, not a guest spot on someone else's platform — and he's there for the whole 90 minutes.

Frequently asked

Do I get a replay?

Yes — everyone who books gets the full recording, including the Q&A, and it stays available for 12 months. This is included with every seat, not an upsell.

Where does it happen?

It runs on Zoom. The link goes out by email the day before, and again an hour before we start. There's nothing to install either — if you'd rather not use the app, Zoom runs fine in a browser.

What if I can't make it live?

Book anyway. The replay and the backing tracks are included for everyone, so nothing is lost except the chance to ask a live question — and you can get around that by sending your question in ahead of time from your seat page. Matt answers pre-submitted questions during the session whether or not you're in the room.

What level do I need to be?

Comfortable intermediate and up. If you can play through a 12-bar blues and find the pentatonic shapes without hunting for them, you'll be able to follow everything. If you're still learning your first chords, this one will move too fast for now.

Do I need my camera on?

No. The default is camera and mic off — most people watch, play along at home, and type questions into the chat. Nobody is put on the spot: questions in the open Q&A come in through the chat, so the recording shows Matt, not you.

What gear do I need?

A guitar and something to watch on. Headphones help if you want to play along without fighting your speakers, and an amp is nice but not required — plenty of people get just as much out of it sitting on the sofa with an unplugged electric.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. You get a full refund within 14 days of purchase, but no later than 24 hours before the clinic (Fri 6 Nov, 18:00 CET). Email info@mattsbluesacademy.com. A refund ends the Academy access that came with your seat, and the seat goes back to the waitlist. After that point, seats can't be refunded.

  • Capped at 30 seats so Matt can actually get to people's questions rather than talk at a crowd.
  • Bookings close 24 hours before the clinic, so the pre-submitted questions can be read and sorted in advance.
